15 Clothing Basics Every Woman Needs in Her Wardrobe

15 Clothing Basics Every Woman Needs in Her Wardrobe

When it comes to having a complete closet, there are certain pieces that every girl should have. Whether its sticking to solids, neutrals, or simple silhouettes, these 15 items are the clothing basics every woman needs to make her wardrobe stretch further and be more versatile.

1. Loose Tee

A loose tee is sure to become an instant favorite. You could literally put the same one on every day and no one would notice because there are so many ways to wear it. Not to mention it is super comfy and still looks cute. Enough said.

2. Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans are a staple in any closet. If you are going to invest a lot of money into one wardrobe item, this would be it because jeans are one of those things that you get what you pay for. I have jeans all over the spectrum, from Forever 21 to Joe’s Jeans, and I can tell you that I will pick my Joe’s Jeans every time. Their fit, fabric and overall comfort are miles ahead of their less-expensive competitors.

3. Oversized watch

Bracelets are great, don’t get me wrong. But sometimes it’s annoying to rummage through your overstuffed jewelry box searching for just the right one to go with your outfit. Oversized watches are so much easier in my opinion because no one expects you to have a watch to match every outfit. It’s totally acceptable to wear the same one all the time. I have an oversized watch with a nude band and gold accents, it matches everything, and I wear it religiously like an engagement ring.

4. Little Black Dress

Oh, the classic little black dress. There’s no way around it. The LBD has stood the test of time and will never go out of style. Dress it up with some heels and a clutch, or dress it down with some white sneakers and a jean jacket. Slimming and versatile, you literally cannot go wrong.

5. Leather Jacket

I can’t stress enough the importance of a moto jacket. The contrast texture of leather next to anything else you pair it with adds instant interest to your outfit. Bonus points for looking totally badass.

6. Statement Necklace

When most people think of statement necklaces they think of a dressy outfit. But this doesn’t have to be the case! Mix and match your outfit, be brave and try something new. My suggestion? Pair your statement necklace with a leather jacket for an unexpected twist that’s sure to make the compliment roll in.

7. Cardigan

Throw one over your outfit to keep cozy, or under a jacket for that layered look. Either way, cardigans are the golden ticket toward looking “comfy cute.”

8. Black Leggings

Need I say more? Leggings are the best invention of all time. They’re comfy, warm and are one of the only bottoms that can go straight from bed to grocery store without judgement. (Just make sure you wear a long shirt. No one likes when you wear leggings as pants.)

9. Blazer

Everyone needs that token blazer in their closet. You’re probably not going to wear it every day, but its still important to have for interviews or events that are a little more dressy. Go for a fashionable blazer in lieu of a more traditional one so you can still wear it on casual days with some booties and a felt hat.

10. Neutral Bag

One of the best purchases I have ever made was my simple, solid black tote. I carry it with me everywhere and it fits my ridiculous hoarding of 25 lipsticks that for some reason I have to have on hand at all times.

11. Comfy Loafers

I’m guilty of knowingly wearing shoes that give me blisters. I know the struggle of preparing your feet with bandaids in the morning and attempting to prevent the pain those boots are about to cause (to no avail). So for days when you just can’t take it anymore, you deserves a pair of comfy shoes. Leather loafers are some of my favorites because they’re supportive and comfortable while giving you a super trendy street chic vibe.

12. Minimal Every Day Studs

I love earrings that you can practically just leave in 24/7. With a minimal set of studs, you won’t have to worry about them competing with your look or other accessories, but they’ll still add a little something to your outfit.

13. Black Pumps

Do yourself a favor and get some black pumps that will take you from day to night in an instant. No matter how many times you go back and forth between what you want to wear on your night out on the town, you’ll have no problem matching your shoes.

14. Scarf

Obviously best for cold weather days, scarves are the perfect addition in place of a necklace to elevate your look. The general rule is to wear a patterned scarf with outfits that have mostly solid colors and vice versa.

15. Basic Knit Sweater

When you just need an easy day of dressing, don’t feel like layering, but still want to look like you actually tried, reach for a sweater. Sweaters are an instant dose of chic to your lazy day.

This is a great list and I have most of these items with a few exceptions (not into watches). I would add chucks, basic flats (so your feet don’t hurt at work), kitten wedges (also so your feet don’t hurt but you get a tiny bit of height), and maybe a cool belt to wear over a dress or oversized shirt. On the topic of lose shirts… I think it’s really fun to pair unlikely things together like a soft, distressed, grungy shirt (maybe a band shirt) with a career blazer or even a sequin blazer for contrast.

      Hi Becki,
I love the contrast of soft and hard to add interest to an outfit. Thanks for the awesome suggestions!
