Purple shampoos that actually work to tone blonde and platinum hair.

As someone who frequently has platinum blonde and pastel silver hair, I know first hand how difficult the upkeep can be. Shower with regular shampoo and your blonde hair starts to turn brassy instead of ashy. Try using a shampoo that isn’t sulfate free and you can kiss your gorgeous hair color goodbye.

If you have cool toned color treated hair, sulfate free purple shampoo is a gentle way of washing so the color doesn’t fade as quickly. If you are concerned with toning out that ugly yellow color, purple shampoo can do that too! Just let the shampoo sit on your head for 3-5 minutes whenever you shower (or as often as needed). With purple shampoo, you might even be able to forgo the toner altogether!

I’ve tried just about every shampoo under the sun, so I know what works and what doesn’t. Below is a list of sulfate free purple shampoos that actually work. I recommend following up with a purple conditioner, so some of the shampoos in this list come with a conditioner for extra toning power. Try any of the following sulfate free purple shampoos and you’ll be on your way to happy, healthy, beautifully toned hair!

I have a real problem finding suitable shampoo in Bangkok.
Nothing here that silver my hair. They all do not stop the brassy look
    from returning.

      Hi Valencia,

I’m not familiar with what products are available in Bangkok, so I can’t make any specific suggestions in that area.

However, if you’ve purchased a purple shampoo from this post and using it in the shower isn’t doing enough to counteract the brass, I DO have a suggestion for you. Try applying the purple shampoo to dry hair and leaving it on for a few hours. Rinse in the shower after you feel enough time has passed. That will give you a more intense silver boost.

If you try that and still aren’t getting the results you want, you may just have to bleach your hair a little bit lighter before the purple shampoo can maximize its potential.

Im a professional cosmetologist, and i can tell you that purple and blue shampoos are for maintenance only. Toners will tone your hair in 20 min, so why would you want to leave a shampoo on for several hours? Additionally, if you bleach your hair and it is still too yellow, no amount of extra bleaching is going to help. Hair will only get so light before it breaks. Pigment isnt just for looks….its part of the structure of the hair. Not everyone can get to a level 8 or 9 pale yellow, which is necessary to be able to tone to silvery white. You can tone all day, if your hair doesnt reach level 8 or 9 pale yellow, toner will do nothing.

I have used them multiple times after getting my hair bleached. They help my hair get to the ashy blonde I desire. I also use them after a month or so if my hair starts to appear brassy again. Why should I have them bleach my hair to the point of damaging when a simple purple shampoo can give me that even tone all over?

      Hey Kathy,

Thanks for your input! Any time I share on my blog, I’m sharing what has worked best for me. In my experience, if you are bleaching your hair and want to do it in a way that is healthy, you will often need multiple sessions spaced apart to get light enough. Yes, there is a point where it won’t lighten any more. But for most people, one session is usually not enough to get to that point without completely frying your hair. Toners never quite did the trick for me, even when my hair was a pale yellow. I also don’t like to use any more developer on my hair than I have to. Purple shampoo has been my saving grace. So if others find themselves in the same boat, I’m happy if I can help offer a solution!

Why would anyone want to use a toner with peroxide on already fragile hair when sulfate free shampoo and conditioner is available?

      Hi Sheriann,

That’s one of the reasons I love purple shampoo! It’s a great way to keep the brass away without further damage.

Only use the purple shampoo every other time. If it’s still retaining the purple, try only once every 4th or 5th washing. Also, I found that I wasn’t rinsing enough. Make sure water is running clear.

I used Fanolo purple shampoo (made in Italy) for about 1 1/2 years when I noticed slight burning, itching after use. Only used once per week. Ignored it and then had a terrific reaction: burning red scalp, horrible itching and my hair started falling out. Have several bald spots. This happened 5 months ago. Used anti-histamines for 2 weeks to help itching. I am using only sulfate free shampoos right now, no blow drying either. But know I will need to use a product for the yellow. Any recommendations. The recs above – not sure why their names are red-lined out?

So many are not aware that fast hair growth scalp therapy shampoos (of course without any sulfates, parabens or DEA) are even a thing. Hair styling enthusiasts are now able to achieve longer hair and enjoy more options. Definitely worth researching.

If you’re discussing hair loss, hair damage, avoiding hair disorders, hair growth, hair health in general, very similar rules become relevant.

As a rule of thumb, you should try to avoid hair products and treatments that include chemicals such as parabens, DEA and sulfates.

What’s good for your hair is beneficial for your skin all the same.

Clearly the content on this page is spot on for various reasons. It steers away from the usual traps and pitfalls so many fall into: purchasing defective alternatives. Keep up the great content!
